Hey skincare lovers (and budget warriors)! Welcome back to the blog. Today, we’re diving deep into something near and dear to my heart (and my wallet): skincare. Specifically, how shockingly expensive it can be, especially here in Singapore!
I’ll confess, I used to be obsessed. Back in my younger days, I’d skip lunch just to save up for a single skincare item. Seriously, a whole week’s lunch money for one product! Looking back, it sounds a bit wild, but my dedication was real. I’d spend a ridiculous two hours getting ready for school, piling on product after product.
Fast forward to my 30s, and my routine became much more chill. I embraced drugstore finds and kept things minimal. Or so I thought… until today!
The Skin Analysis That Changed Everything (and Emptied My Wallet)
I got sucked back in, big time. My family and I were intrigued by a skin analysis session, and let me tell you, it was a rude awakening! My skin, which I thought looked “okay” (a bit oily, some old acne scars), turned out to be a hot mess. The analysis showed so much gunk stuck in my pores, and they were visibly open and clogged. If your pores are clogged, no matter how amazing your skincare is, it’s just not going to penetrate and do its job!
This revelation hit me hard. I felt like I hadn’t been taking care of my skin at all. The shock led me down a familiar path: a $300 splurge on just two Kiehl’s products! My husband, naturally, was not thrilled. He’s seen my past skincare hoarding habits.
Why Kiehl’s? And Is It Worth It?
Now, Kiehl’s isn’t exactly high-end like Clinique, but it’s definitely a high-quality brand with a great reputation. What I love about them is their commitment to being environmentally friendly (yay for recycled bottles!) and, most importantly, their evidence-based skincare. They use ingredients that are proven to work, and for me, that’s crucial.
My skin analysis specifically highlighted lack of hydration and clogged pores on my forehead and cheeks. My nose, surprisingly, was fine! So, with my skin screaming for attention, I took the plunge, hoping these expensive new additions would be the answer.
My Skincare Philosophy (and How It’s Evolving)
I used to be a serial product jumper. If I didn’t see immediate results, I’d ditch it and try something new, ending up with a closet full of half-used bottles. This time, I’m trying to be more disciplined. I’ve been using the same toner for a year and a brightening serum for my acne spots, but honestly, it hasn’t quite brought my skin back to its “prime” from six years ago. That’s why I splurged on the Kiehl’s.
I truly believe skincare is an investment in yourself and your confidence. When my skin looks good, I feel more confident in social settings and at work. I used to get so many compliments on my skin, and I want that back!
My Skincare Essentials (and My #1 Secret!)
So, what do you really need for a good skincare regimen?
- Know your skin type! Are you dry, oily, or combination? This is your starting point.
- Gentle Cleanser: Wash away the day’s grime.
- Toner: To balance your skin after cleansing and help close pores. If you wear makeup, a double cleanse is a game-changer.
- Eye Serum/Cream: While your regular moisturizer can help, eye products often have specific ingredients like caffeine or Vitamin C to target puffiness and dark circles.
- Face Serum: This is where you target your specific concerns, like dark spots (my current focus!). I grabbed Kiehl’s Dark Spot Corrector (100ml, over $100, but should last me six months!).
- Moisturizer: Even oily skin needs hydration! Opt for a lighter one, like Neutrogena’s hyaluronic acid formulas, for oily/combination skin.
- Nourishing Night Cream: While you sleep, your skin goes into repair mode, so a richer night cream is perfect.
- Retinol: Since I’m 30, I’m adding a touch of retinol for its anti-aging benefits. The Kiehl’s Peptide Serum I bought complements the dark spot corrector and helps with anti-aging.
And now, for my biggest, most crucial skincare secret:
SUNSCREEN. ALWAYS. EVERY SINGLE DAY.
Seriously. Start young, even in elementary school! Sunscreen is your ultimate protector against premature aging and sun damage. Even with brown Indian skin like mine, you still get sun damage if you spend time outdoors, especially in hot and sunny Singapore! I will always wear sunscreen, even if I skip every other step.
So, skincare can be fun, interesting, and definitely make a dent in your wallet! I’m giving these new Kiehl’s products six months to see if they make my skin “bloom” as they claim. If not, I’m not buying them again. $300 is a hefty commitment!

That’s all for today, bye!
